This one is a bit quiet and features an amazing nigh on six minute Loop 41 intro. Drums are clear as is the guitar, keys and bass do not shine through a lot of the time. Mark is a little muffled at the outset. There are a few glitches in my recording.
"Loco" is dominated by Ben's guitar and Mark is back in the mix in a sort of a garbled style. Some excellent double time drumming from Mr Milner. By the time "Contraflow" arrives it is apparent that the tapist is near Ben's end of the stage and is picking up his amp predominantly. Some good descending bass runs from Steve here. Mark's vocals are mostly indistinct towards the end the track.
A good version of "Middlemass" however Mark is mostly lost in the overall sound.
It should be noted that Mr Smith performed this gig sitting down. Interesting that two 80s numbers are played cheek by jowl. Again another excellently delivered "Pseud Mag Ed" suffers from distant Smith. A fast tempo "Mountain Energie" has a nice dynamic - "its so nice to be back by the seaside" introduces a sort of showbandy version of "Grass Grow" with Ben perhaps over-licking a tad.
A slight peroration on the capacity of the microphones and a passing reference to local folk hero B Springsteen launches a fast-paced "Telephone Thing" where we get to listen to Elena's keyboards at long last. Some impressive wah-rhythm from Ben and great rhythmical interplay between Trafford and Milner.
Good to hear the early fast take on "Sparta" which is full of bullish vibe and football chant vox from the band. "Janet etc" is exquisitely minimal - a pity Mark's vocal is not properly presented. "Pharmacist" is short and sweet - followed by a straight run through of "Walk Like a Man" which has minimal vocals as Mark adopts a reggae toasting stylee.
Apparently its always Christmas for Damo Susuki, and the Hoboken humour has been relocated somewhere where the drums come in. Excellent superfast drumming from Milner with contrapuntal slow guitar from Ben. Amazing nine minute plus version. If that was not enough the treat of nine minutes of pure para funk "Bucks" is a superb confection with which to end the gig.
Excellent gig spoiled by Mark's very low vocal mix and some continuous glitching in the recording. Mr Smith performed most of the gig sitting down,
